Events at the Capitol

Dear Maret Community,

Since early this afternoon, we have been witnessing historic and scary events unfolding at the Capitol and in our city. Many of our children are also hearing about this situation and will have questions and concerns, a number of which we cannot answer.

I want to assure you that your School team just met and will continue to meet to discuss how to open school tomorrow and how to help our students process what is transpiring. As adults, we should not ignore what is in front of us, but we also need to remember how to approach this situation in age appropriate ways. Here are two good resources from the Child Mind Institute to use as your children head to bed or wake up tomorrow:

  1. Helping Children Cope With Frightening News
  2. Helping Children Cope After a Traumatic Event

Our teachers will begin the day acknowledging what we know and what we have seen, again in age-appropriate ways. They will also reassure our students that there are people and resources available to help them process concerns or questions that may come up during the day.

Just a reminder that we Stand Together as we navigate through such an unprecedented time. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions on how we can support one another.
